Last year in my post Nourishing Hearts and Minds, I promised that I will ask for your help in bettering the lives of Afghan people only once a year. That time has come, so I write to tell you about Afghan Friends Network (AFN), a non-profit organization near and dear to my heart devoted to education in Afghanistan.
March is an auspicious month for us at AFN: from celebrating the Afghan New Year to the annual AFN fundraising luncheon, and my own preparations for a trip to Afghanistan. As I get ready for my fourteen day journey, my emotions run the gamut from fear to excitement, anxiety, curiosity, and most of all the anticipation of seeing the faces of our students, teachers, and all the women who are part of our programs.
Going back to Afghanistan when things have reached a boiling point was not an easy decision for me. A couple of months ago when I told a friend about my upcoming trip, he quickly confronted me about it. He compared my decision to go into a war zone to his choice to go helicopter skiing; something his friends often tell him is reckless. Instead of shrugging off his bourgeois analogy, I calmly explained that this is my opportunity to see the schools I have helped to build, where we educate 500 girls and 250 boys and 80 women. I have spent nine years of my life working to affect these lives in a positive way.
Part of me wished I’d told him that comparing an exclusive and risky sporting activity to my Afghanistan trip hardly seems appropriate. It’s something that feels essential to my work, and is based on calculated risk and extremely careful planning. It may be dangerous, but not futile. There are people who are taking much bigger chances than I am. What it all comes down to is that I personally want to meet the girls at our schools, the women who are becoming literate, and the boys who will be better citizens due to the schools we have created. Of course I do have trepidations about the trip, and about leaving my two kids, but they will be in good hands with their Dad and a doting grandmother.
So, I invite you to support me in my efforts for education in Afghanistan. Join Afghan Friends Network for our fabulous fundraising luncheon on March 30th, 2011. We will serve an Afghan feast, hear from award winning Afghan journalist Fariba Nawa, and spend the lunch hour being responsible global activists. If you are unable to join us, please consider making a contribution to an AFN project that is meaningful to you.
